Overlapping Calendars: Colonial Legacies and the Economic Consequences of School Calendar Misalignment - 2026
This paper shows that misalignment between school calendars and local agricultural cycles—rooted in colonial legacies—raises dropout rates by increasing child labor during peak seasons. Using cross-country and Colombia-specific evidence, it demonstrates that aligning institutional timing with local economic conditions can significantly improve educational outcomes.
